S.P.E.A.R. Certification - Is it worth the time and money?
Posted by: Conrad - 05-13-2017, 03:23 AM - Forum: General Martial Arts - Replies (5)

I've been researching Blauer's S.P.E.A.R System and flirting with the idea of pursuing it.  Does anyone here have any thoughts?  I believe Kong Soo Do Karate got the certification at one point.  Do you think it is worth it?

I've changed from Kong Soo Do to Kong Soo Do Karate.  This is to honor both the Korean and the Okinawan roots that have gone into my training.  Although a bit redundant, I feel it honors both lineages.

  Women's Self Defense Course
Posted by: Kong Soo Do Karate - 03-17-2017, 11:45 AM - Forum: Self-defense - Replies (15)

I've been asked to teach a woman's self defense course.  I've done so in the past and have my outline but would like to solicit any additional information, links, videos etc from the membership to look at to add to what I already have prepared.  Always want to see if there is something I've missed, something that can be improved etc.

My areas are home, travel and personal defense to include hands-on, conventional weapons to include firearms and improvised weapons.

Thank you.

Information Situational awareness
Posted by: Kong Soo Do Karate - 02-28-2017, 01:05 PM - Forum: General Martial Arts - Replies (4)

I related an incident on the SEP board that happened to me a couple of weeks ago.  Thought it may be good to pass it on.

Quote:Last Friday evening I'm on my way home from work in my POV.  My normal route was clogged with traffic according to my traffic-tracker app (assuming an accident) so I take a secondary route that I only occasionally travel.  I'm stopped at a red light, turning left.  Light turns green and I proceed normally.  I need to make a right onto another road a couple of miles up so I glance in the mirrors and glance over my shoulder to make a lane change to the center lane.  Nearest vehicle I estimate is about 5 car lengths behind me so I start to change lanes.  The vehicle behind me in the center lane races up on me, I can tell he probably floored it judging by the revved engine sound I hear and how quickly he closes the distance trying to cut me off.  I'm more than half way through the lane change so I complete it, and of course the idiot is now right on my bumper.  Well, it's been a long 12 hour shift and I just want to get home and take a shower so as soon as I'm past the car in the right lane I make a lane change to the right lane.  He again floors it and races past me and then gets in the right lane in front of me and stops.  So now I'm stopped about a cars length behind him, cars stopped behind me and traffic in the center and left lane.  The guy actually gets out of his truck and literally starts spitting towards my car.  I don't know know if the guys high or just an A-hole but I'm focused on his hands which are empty.  He then gets back in his truck, closes the door and then the door flies open and he's back out.  This time though I can't see his left hand closest to the truck bed.  He starts to approach my vehicle.  Well I'm buckled in and not real comfortable with the whole tactical situaiton as it's unfolding.  So I slam the shifter into 'park', unbuckle and step out of my vehicle (but stay behind the door).  I guess the idiot wasn't expecting me to be in uniform and fully armed (my hand was resting on my sidearm).  He stops dead in his tracks.  I tell him in my very best 'warning' (but professional) tone that if he has a problem I'll solve it for him. He just stands there so I tell him to get his arse back in the truck.  He does and about hits two other cars trying to get into the left lane and away from the area.  I was so focused on his hands, body language and the traffic around us that I didn't get a chance to get his tag number.  So the situation was over and I proceeded home.

Had I not been in uniform and gave him that visual startle the situation may have unfolded differently.  I can't think of anything I would have done differently.  He forced the situation by racing up on me from so far back.  No need for that at all.  I did my lane change with more than enough room.  He then forced the situation by racing past me only to get in my lane and stop.  And finally he forced the situation by stepping (twice) from his vehicle.  Had he not stopped I would have drawn on him due to his pre-fight indicators and traffic hazzards present. Fighting in the middle of the road doesn't sound like the best option.  I would have verbally challenged him again of course but anything after that would have been on him.  In Florida we have the Stand-Your-Ground law.  Anyway, that was my Friday evening...

Also yesterday I had a violent felon try to stab me with a pen that he pulled from his waistband.  Not much to the whole thing and he was unsuccessful and quickly on the ground and subdued.  But it is a good illustration to always be aware of your surroundings and the persons hands.
