Breaking down Chin Na techniques

In the above clip you see three similar defenses against a straight punch;

  • In movement number one the catching of the punch with the left and probably won't happen in real life.  I can see it being applicable from perhaps a grapple or you've grabbed the attacker's wrist when it's not being used to punch you.  The strike under the ribs, probably not more than a distraction which means it's a wasted movement in that it probably isn't going to do much to stop your attacker's actions.  The rest is fluff.  It could be used after an opponent is stunned, but the movements in this first clip aren't going to produce the desired effects.
  • In the second movement the left hand is more of a block or deflection than a grab so I can accept that as workable.  The right palm heel to the face is workable.  The grabbing of the head and throwing to the ground is workable.  The opponent has to be stunned or injured though.
  • Last movement the right hand block/deflection is workable but don't count on the grab.  The hammer fist to the head is workable.  The throw as presented isn't going to work without the attacker's assistance which he isn't likely to give.
Overall some fluff that won't work in real life with a determined attacker but a couple of good things that can be taken away.  First, if the attacker is slow and you can actually grab their wrist then great, but don't beat the farm on it.  Concentrate on a gross motor skill deflection to stay on the outside of the attacker.  Second, have the follow up be something that will actually ring their bell or cause damage to the extent that they can't or don't want to continue.  Make every strike/kick count.
